Test run for bangus selling sked begins Monday
EXCLUSIVE DAGUPAN BANGUS TRADING
A TEST run for the new schedule in selling milkfish at the Dagupan Fish Market starts August 5, a scheme that aims to help boost the price of Dagupan bangus, the city’s most popular and major product.
Mayor Belen Fernandez and members of the consignacion (wholesalers) who are milkfish producers themselves met last week to finalize the plan.
Local bangus producers have been adversely affected by the low market price of bangus from western Pangasinan at P75 per kilo.
“We have to do this because at P75 per kilo, our local producers are operating at a loss and are now thinking of giving up,” the mayor said.
To protect the quality the Dagupan bangus and viability of the city’s bangus industry, Fernandez suggested the exclusive selling days of Dagupan bangus for three days and allow only four days to be opened for bangus coming from western Pangasinan.
“The Dagupan bangus should command a better price because it tastes better than any milkfish produced in other parts of Pangasinan and the country,” Fernandez said.
Fernandez also asked the local producers to agree on staggard harvesting schedule and avoid simultaneous harvests.
Dagupan produces three to five metric tons of milkfish daily while western Pangasinan combined is producing up to 30-60 metric tons per day.
