PSU president lauds Espino
LINGAYEN–Pangasinan State University (PSU) President Victoriano C. Estira lauded the leadership of Governor Amado T. Espino Jr. in his first State of the University Address delivered during the university’s 34th founding anniversary celebration on July 24 at the Sison Auditorium.
Speaking on behalf of officials, faculty and staff and students of the university, the PSU president expressed gratitude to national and local officials and the benefactors who have made the university what it is today.
Estira further thanked the governor for various programs and projects his administration has initiated and sponsored for the university, which include infrastructure developments and scholarship to students (provincial scholars), among others.
Recently, the provincial government sponsored trainings for the extension programs and services of the university, he added.
In response, Gov. Espino urged educators of PSU to complement the strategic steps being undertaken by the provincial government for the province.
“I hold with high regard the dedication and brilliance of our educators in PSU — all who have proven their worth and steadfast commitment as reliable partners in poverty alleviation and nation building,” Espino said.
The governor has close ties with PSU since he spent a substantial part of his student life in the Bayambang campus, the former Pangasinan Normal School, where his father, Amado T. Espino, taught, before he joined the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) in Baguio City. He also completed his Master of Arts in Development Management at PSU.
Through the years, PSU excels in its four-fold functions (instruction, research, extension and production), producing graduates who top licensure examinations in engineering, fisheries, nursing and education; and crafting quality researches and pioneering various extension and production schemes and services.
After the introduction of the Colleges of Law and Medicine, PSU will become a “total complete university” for the province, making the institution number one in Pangasinan, he reported.
Vice President for Business and Resource Generation Artemio Rebugio, who served as founding anniversary chairperson, meanwhile, said “PSU has evolved into a multi-program campuses — a strategy which maintains its relevance and expertise in the field of higher education.”
“The magnitude of enrolment which is increasing yearly signifies the magnitude of challenge the university faces in order to cater to the needs of the increasing student population,” he added.
At present, PSU has 23,000 enrollees in its nine campuses, Graduate School in Urdaneta City and in the Open University System in Lingayen.
Rebugio also thanked the provincial government under Espino for the use of the historical and newly renovated Sison Auditorium, saying “this certifies quality relationship in resource-sharing between the provincial government and PSU.”
A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was also forged between PSU and the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), represented by Chief Officer Emilio Samson, for a partnership in honing PSU students enrolled in Bachelor of Science in Social Work.
The PSU president, assisted by his vice presidents — Dr. Manolito Manuel, Academic Affairs; Mr. Alex Mores, Administration and Finance; Dr. Honorio Cascolan, Research and Extension Services; and Artemio Rebugio — conferred an award to Acting Assistant Provincial Agriculturist Nestor Batalla, former PSU Alumni Regent.
A grand fellowship night of the university followed. (PIO)
