PHILIPPINE national team member Robeno Javier outrun a record field of 800 duathletes to win the opening leg of the 2013 Philippine Duathlon Series held at Filinvest City grounds in Alabang, Muntinlupa City on July 14.

The Urdaneta City native Javier, 29, broke away from the pack in the six-kilometer run, increased his gap in the bike event and maintained his front in the last three-kilometer second run to win by three seconds over his closest pursuer, former Asian duathlon champion Ryan Mendoza.

Javier’s townmate, national junior duathlete champion Robinson Esteves, came in third.

The veteran duathlete Javier, who placed third in the Asian Cup in Palambang, Indonesia recently, clocked the six-kilometer run, 30-kilometer bike race and three-kilometer run in one hour, 19 minutes and 54 seconds.

Esteves was 5 minutes and 37 seconds adrift Javier.

The second leg will be held in September.–JAGJr.
