THE contentious issue surrounding the management of the Seafood Processing Plant in Dagupan City during the Lim administration was finally settled.

Mayor Belen Fernandez has officially acknowledged the management of the plant to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

Dr. Westly Rosario, chief of the BFAR’s National Integrated Fisheries and Technology Development Center (NIFTDC) and appointed interim manager of the plant, heaved a sigh of relief on the resolution of the longstanding management problem.

Rosario compared the situation of the plant to a family house where the parents did not specifically identify who among the children will own the house.

Nagyon, malinaw na kung sino ang magpapatakbo ng planta,” he said.

Now that BFAR is the legal manager of the plant, its request for funding and repair works from the head office have been approved.

Rosario they are also now awaiting the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) certification for the plant.

The HACCP system is an internationally accepted system of preventative food safety management and certification applying to food manufacturers and processors.

With an HACCP certification, fish products processed at the plant will have better access to the international market.

“The bottomline is, this plant will now run,” Rosario said. (PIA1-Pangasinan/VHS)
