GOVERNOR Amado Espino Jr., re-elected for a third term last May 13, spent P4,652,193.86 for his campaign expenditures, based on documents submitted to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) provincial office here.

His defeated rival, outgoing Alaminos City Mayor Hernani Braganza, reported expenses of P3,568,345.20.

Espino’s running mate, re-elected Vice Gov. Jose Ferdinand Calimlim Jr., spent P1,703,906.71 while his opponent, retired Philippine National Police chief Arturo Lomibao, declared P643,396.78 expenditures.

For congressional winners, re-elected 1st District Rep. Jesus Celeste reported P677,700; re-elected 2nd District Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil, P822,214.16); neophyte 3rd District Rep. Rosemarie “Baby” Arenas who ran unopposed, P450,000; re-elected 4th District Rep. Gina de Venecia, P785,000; re-elected 5th District Rep. Kimi Cojuangco, P350,899.64; and unopposed re-elected 6th District Rep. Marlyn Primicias-Agabas, P750,000.

Eight other candidates in the provincial level who were all losers failed to beat the deadline on June 13 for the filing of their statement of contribution and expenses at the Comelec provincial office.

Their names, however, were not immediately released by the Comelec office pending the sorting of all documents submitted.

Based on Comelec record, Pangasinan has 1,651,814 registered voters in the recently-concluded mid-term elections.

Each independent candidate is allowed to spend P3 for each voter and P5 each if the aspirant has a political party, according to lawyer Marino Salas, provincial election supervisor.

Those who failed to declare their expenses will have to submit their papers at the Comelec office in Manila and would face penalty, he added.–Eva Visperas
