Chan is “not disturbed” by ouster moves

LINGAYEN—Senior Superintendent Marlou Chan, the provincial police director, is sticking to his post despite a legal case filed by a popular governor seeking his ouster and a plea from the provincial board.

“Let’s us allow the court to decide and for the meantime we just continue with our job. We are not disturbed by such petition, if at all. But it inspires us to do some more,” said Chan.

The embattled police officer said he will just continue with his work and program, which he calls “focused police operations”.

The program includes a drive against loose firearms, checkpoints, anti-street crimes operations, and addressing shooting incidents, among others.

Chan also clarified that of the 99 shooting incidents recorded since January 1, there is a 55 per cent crime solution efficiency, which is higher than the previous year’s record.

The case filed by Governor Amado Espino Jr. against Chan is supported by a petition signed by several Pangasinan mayors citing the allegedly numerous shooting incidents under Chan’s watch.

The cited shooting incidents, Chan added, “are still a bit lower when compared to last year’s record”.

PEOPLE’S SUPPORT

He appealed for the people’s support, especially in the grassroots level, to help address these concerns.

On the other hand, Provincial Board Member Alfonso Bince Jr., author of a board resolution expressing support to Espino and asking Chan to step down, has pointed out that Espino won his bid for a third term last May by more than 500,000 votes, an indication of his strong support among Pangasinenses.

“The voice of the people is the voice of God,” said Bince.

Espino, in his petition, invoked Section 51 of Republic Act of 6975 – the Department of Interior and Local Government Law, which provides that “the incumbent governor is granted the right to choose among three eligible officers recommended, to the position of PNP police provincial director.”–Eva Visperas
