PNP happy over TRO on liquor ban

IT’S not just the liquor companies and sellers, but also the police, who are glad about the temporary restraining order (TRO) issued by the Supreme Court (SC) on the five-day liquor ban in relation to the May 13 election.

Senior Inspector Ryan Manongdo, spokesperson of the Pangasinan police provincial office (PPO), said while they would have readily enforced the ban, which would have been longer than the customary two-day ban, it is a relief not to have the additional task.

Manongdo explained that the force already has its hands full with most of the policemen already deployed in polling centers to safeguard the Precinct Count Optical Scan (PCOS) machines and secure voting areas while others are carrying out regular police duties.

The SC, acting on a petition filed by two liquor companies, issued on Wednesday a TRO that stopped the implementation of the five- day liquor ban imposed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

With the TRO, the liquor ban is back to the original period of one day before and during the day of elections or on May 12 and 13..—Dada Martin
