Comelec citizenship case vs. Sison
AGNO—The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has junked the disqualification case filed against mayoralty candidate Gualberto Sison by his opponent, re-electionist Mayor Jose Pajeta Jr., questioning his Filipino citizenship.
A two-page en banc decision signed by Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes on April 12 rules that Sison “deemed to have satisfied the requirement must be a citizen of the Philippines”.
Sison submitted a certified true copy of the certification from the Bureau of Immigration of the Department of Justice issued on Dec. 1, 2011 by Alfonso Ver, deputy consul general of the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco, California, USA indicating that Sison has re-acquired his Philippine citizenship and oath of allegiance.
The Comelec order said these “are concrete and clear evidence that respondent Sison re-acquired Philippine citizenship as of Dec. 1, 2011 which date of re-acquisition was one year and five months before the May 13, 2013 elections”.
