Fil-Ams, US investors bullish on Pangasinan
LOS ANGELES, California–Filipino-Americans, particularly native born Pangasinenses based in the United States, are bullish on their home province’s economy and that of the Philippines as a whole.
A group unveiled a plan to open doors for Philippine products and link the local producers with US importers who have signified interest to buy Philippine-made products.
Pangasinan Brotherhood Association (PBA)-USA President Eddie Ferrer told book author and businessman Melandrew T. Velasco, a native of Pangasinan about the plan during the latter’s recent visit to Southern California.
Ferrer, a successful businessman engaged in cargo and forwarding, said that “with our knowledge and experience in the industry, we can help our provincemates augment their income or branch out to other income-generating activities thereby giving them a chance and opportunity to improve their quality of life. “
Early this year, the Pangasinan Brotherhood Association successfully organized a Trade and Business Initiative seminar in cooperation with the Philippine Consulate General office of Los Angeles and the Filipino-American Chamber of Commerce of Southeast Corridor headed by Felix B Lopez.
Ferrer said the PBA-USA will serve as a conduit between potential U.S. buyers of Philippine goods and the local manufacturers of the province in support of the “One Town, One Product” initiative of the Philippine government.
Consul-General Hellen Barber-de Vega, a Pangasinan daughter-in-law, took note of the Port of Sual as a potential trans-shipment and the future Export Processing Zone for their strategic locations.
For his part, Velasco lauded the initiative of the Pangasinan Brotherhood Association even as he disclosed that as early as 2009, Pangasinan Gov. Amado T. Espino Jr. already mulled the plan to export proudly Pangasinan-made products through businessman Benigno Gotoc Jr. whose expertise is importing Philippine-made products and distributing them to Fil-Am and Asian stores in Northern America.
Velasco vowed to support the planned September 2013 Trade and Investments Conference by the Pangasinan Brotherhood Association in cooperation with the Philippine and Pangasinan governments.
