LIBEL CASES VS. 4 BROADCASTERS

THE Association of Private Schools, Colleges and Universities  (APSCU) in Region 1 came forward to condemn the irresponsible statements of four local broadcasters that sought to cast aspersion on the integrity of one of its prominent members, the Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU), as an educational institution.

APSCU made its position known through its Resolution No. 1:2013 dated April 5, 2012, expressing support for Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) after it initiated legal action for libel against four broadcasters of two Dagupan radio stations.

APSU, headed by Mac Arthur Samson, president of University of Luzon,  is an aggrupation of private educational institutions that seek to promote and develop education by the private sector.

Specifically, APSCU has requested the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters ng Pilipinas (KBP) to sanction the two radio stations for “their irresponsible acts of broadcasting reports deemed detrimental to the operation of private educational institutions”.

The separate complaints for libel was filed by lawyer Gonzalo Duque, LNU president, against Edmund Salacup, alias Bombo Bogs Toribio of DZWN Bombo Radio; and Leu Paragas, Orlando Navarro, alias Orly Navarro and Jay Mendoza of DZRD Sonshine Radio.

Also included in the complaints are Bombo Radio Philippines, owner of DZWN Bombo Radio Dagupan; and Sonshine Radio Philippines, owner of DZRD Sonshine Radio.

The APSCU resolution stated that “LNU’s image has been tarnished by the radio stations for airing unverified, anonymous and libelous allegations that the institution is selling diplomas for both Master and Doctorate degrees for P100,000 and P150,000, respectively.”

Samson said that any private educational institution in Region 1 is vulnerable and can suffer the same fate if radio stations and broadcasters are allowed to be licentious in their commentaries.
