SAN CARLOS CITY—Thousands of people joined a two-kilometer long caravan that brought Mayor Julian Resuello to his final resting place on May 20 at his family-owned Holy Garden Memorial Park in barangay Agdao here.

The interment of the 54-year old Resuello patriarch was held after a holy mass at the St. Dominic Church, exactly three weeks after he succumbed to assassins’ bullets. His civilian security Eulogio Martinez was also killed.

Tight security measures were adopted by a contingent from the local police, Regional Mobile Group, the Philippine Army and Philippine Air Force throughout.

Everybody who went inside the church was frisked and bags were searched for lethal weapons.

For security reasons, no public viewing of the remains of Resuello was allowed, except by members of the family of the slain mayor led by his son Julier.

Julier, 28, former vice mayor of the city, succeeded his father as mayor having received a fresh mandate in the last election to govern as  San Carlos City for three years, along with his younger brother Joseres, 24, who substituted their dead father as vice mayoralty candidate.

Then city was peppered with tarpaulins of blown-up photos of the bloodied Resuello, caught by a camera, just seconds after he was gunned down while posters “Justice for Mayor Jolly Resuello” were strung to several vehicles that joined the caravan.

The slain Mayor Resuello was hailed by Fr. Jimmy Catungal as one of the heroes of San Carlos City.

Residents tied black ribbons along the road to barangay Agdao and put up placards that read: “Thank you, Mayor Resuello and Godspeed”.

At the end of the funeral march, only the immediate members of the family of Resuello, his close friends and relatives were allowed to enter the memorial park.

Resuello was credited for transforming the once sleepy San Carlos City into a beehive of trade and commerce in central Pangasinan.

He relocated two public elementary schools in the city proper and created a commercial area in order to lure in investors.

This resulted in the construction of a multi-million peso warehouse club by the Dagupan-based City Supermarket Inc.—LM
