SOME 3,000 volunteers are busy at work in Alaminos City from March 23 to 27 for the Bayani Challenge 2013, a nationwide event promoting volunteerism in nation-building.

The five-day event is a test of courage, endurance and love for country, engaging in various activities that include construction and refurbishment of homes and schools, education sessions for children, tree-planting, mangrove planting, clean-up drives and health missions.

Dr. Eric Cayabyab, point person of Gawad Kalinga (GK) Foundation for the Pangasinan event, said the Bayani Challenge seeks to “counter apathy and materialism prevalent in society by instilling lasting hope and concretizing compassion into sustainable, positive action”.

Cayabyab added that the Bayani Challenge, now on its 8th year, has been made more attractive with the addition of fun activities such as marathons, a Master Kusinero cooking competition, sports competitions and Laro ng Lahi games.

Bayani Challenge is a multi-sectoral partnership spearheaded by Pilipinas Natin, the flagship volunteer program of the Presidential Communications Operations Office, with government agencies, private sector companies and groups, the media, and non-government/non-profit organizations.
