MALASIQUI—A P50,000 fund is at stake for the barangay here with the most number of malunggay plants grown as the town strives to live up to its claim as the Malunggay Capital of Pangasinan.

Mayor Armand Domantay said the competition aims to encourage communities to participate in the massive malunggay (Moringa oleifera) planting program.

The municipal government is targetting all available lots to be grown with the “miracle plant”.

Out of the 73 barangays, 13 have been shortlisted and the winners will be announced during the town fiesta celebration in January.

Malasiqui was declared Malunggay Capital earlier through an ordinance passed by the provincial board.

Aside from the P50,000 first prize, the municipal government set aside P30,000 and P20,000 for the second and third prizes, respectively, and 10 consolation prizes of P5,000 each for the award of “Most Outstanding Barangay for the Production of Malunggay Trees”.

Winners will be judged based on the number of malunggay trees that survived in their barangays since the contest was launched last year.

“We really want to prove that we are the Malunggay Capital and we really have the highest number of malunggay trees alive,” said Domantay, adding that the cultivation must be sustained.

The local government appropriated P200,000 for the current year and P100,000 for the next four consecutive years in the annual budget for the propagation of malunggay.
