ALAMINOS CITY—The city government and the private sector are joining hands for the staging of Bayani Challenge 2013, a nationwide humanitarian activity that will be participated in by some 100,000 volunteers in 33 areas, one of which is this city.

With the theme “Isang Bayan, Isang Bayanihan”, the Bayani Challenge 2013 is a project spearheaded by Gawad Kalinga Foundation, a group involved in home-building for the poor, with other private sector groups, the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) and other government agencies.

Eric Cayabyab, a GK national officer, stressed during a Partners’ Forum in Alaminos City last February 25 that the event set on March 23 to 27 is a “non-political activity”.

Eddie Cera, head of Gawad Kalinga in Pangasinan, enjoined the public to participate in the heroic event.

The hosting of the Bayani Challenge in Alaminos City will be spearheaded by Lian Braganza, a GK volunteer and president of the Hundred Islands Youth and Sports Council.

Braganza said the activity will not only focus on building 16 houses in the GK Eco-Village in Barangay Lucap  but will also involve planting of mangroves, coastal clean up, tree planting, environmental sanitation, and community organizing.

Other participating agencies are the Department of Education, Department of Tourism, Philippine Information Agency, Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines (ULAP) and Globe.

OTHER LGUS

Meanwhile, GK’s Cera called on local government units in Pangasinan to set aside lands where GK villages could be built, noting that so far only four LGUs in the province —  Alaminos and Dagupan Cities, and the municipalities of Sta. Barbara and Villasis — have GK villages.

The biggest number of GK houses at 203 are in Dagupan; 100 in Barangay Matic-Matic and 40 in Barangay Leet in Sta. Barbara; 30 in Villasis; and 20 in Alaminos. (with report from PIA-Pangasinan/VHS)
