Letter from Sen. Alan Cayetano

To my brothers and sisters in Pangasinan –

Many have raised serious concerns about the increasing violence in our midst the past weeks, particularly after the gun ban took effect.  I share the view that our law enforcement agencies must respond effectively today, not tomorrow.

But having said that, we must learn to look at the problem from a bigger perspective. What I see today as the root of the worsening crimes is the lack of jobs for our people. We simply do not have enough for our growing population. Many are desperate while some are taking shortcuts to alleviate their poverty. Of course, there are the hardcore criminals who don’t deserve the slightest consideration.

With more jobs, more family members earning enough for their needs, the likelihood of seeing less persons violating our laws is greater.  So the noted worsening crime wave is not entirely the fault of our police.  This is not to shield and defend the shortcomings of our law enforcement agencies whom our people rightly expect to keep our streets and homes safe from criminal elements but to point out our government should continue to create a healthy business environment that would in turn create provide more job opportunities.

Till then, keep praying for our nation.

Sincerely,

Alan
