Gonz Duque endorses De Venecia
Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities (PACU) first vice president Gonzalo Duque on Friday endorsed the reelection of Speaker Jose de Venecia citing the low record of his opponent, Dagupan Mayor Benjie Lim, as a former congressman in the district.
Duque, however, belittled the explanation of Lim who reportedly said he had the misfortune of not belonging to the ruling political party of then President Erap Estrada.
Duque, who ran against De Venecia twice in the district’s congressional races in l987 and l99l said, “I hope my friend (Mayor Lim) does not forget that in case he is successful in getting elected again on May l4, he will again be an odd man out because he will be under a president whom he demanded to resign for alleged cheating in the 2004 elections.”
He quoted newspaper accounts that said that even the political opposition had admitted that President Arroyo “will still be the President until 20l0, and it was impossible for him to reconcile with her even for any other reason.”
Duque said “it is ridiculous that an ineffectual candidate for congressman will even have the audacity to fight an outstanding congressman-speaker (De Venecia) who has been tried and tested as an outstanding legislator here and abroad.”
“I want to say something good about Benjie, but his decision to run against De Venecia, a close ally of President Arroyo, who is Lakas national chairman, is the height of foolishness,” he stressed.
“It is patently clear and true that while Benjie Lim would be a do-nothing congressman under a Gloria Arroyo presidency, De Venecia would be her best partner in pushing Philippines and Pangasinan progress,” Duque said.
He appealed to the fourth district voters to vote intelligently.
