Marikina rider wins Alaminos bikefest
ALAMINOS CITY–Unheralded Romeo Camingao of Marikina City surprised all his competitors by outsprinting a group of ten riders in the final 200-hundred meter stretch to win by a bike length in the Alaminos Cycling Challenge held here last Tuesday.
The 41 year-old Camingao, a mainstay of the Alex Billan group of riders of Metro Manila, withstood numerous attacks in the three hilltop summit sprints and never faded away up to the finish.
He clocked the 51-kilometer 2013 Ronda Pilipinas eight stage preface race in one hour, 48 minutes and 12 seconds and pocketed the P3,600 top prize plus a trophy.
Two-time Olympian Jazy Garcia of Mangaldan came in close second and Camingao’s teammate and Tour veteran Roel Gendrano landed third.
Topping the 50 year-old-and-above category was American rider William Bloom with San Fabian ace Alex Jugo and Allan Calpito of Dagupan City coming second and third, respectively.
The bikefest was sponsored by Excellent Noodles of Alex Billan with 34 starters and all of them survived the short but hilly course event.
The city administrator, Retired Col. Wilmer Panabang, awarded all the cash prizes, trophies and medals.
“There will be another one similar to this race to be conducted in our town fiesta this coming March 17, and to be sponsored again by Excellent Noodles,” Panabang announced to the delight of the competitors and the crowd.
“It will be a little longer and tougher the next time,” he added–JAGJr.
