Sembrano rules 14th Ginez cycling race

FORMER RP national team member and Mangaldan ace rider Renato Sembrano engineered a three-man breakaway pack 40 kilometers from the start, outpedalling his two breakaway partners on the last 300 meters to rule the star-studded 14th Engr. Fidel D. Ginez Cycling Classic that started and finished at Asingan town last Sunday.

Sembrano’s bagged P10,700 for placing first, including his summit wins, and a trophy. His two breakaway mates, Joel Calderon of Guimba, Nueva Ecija and local boy Baler Ravina, finished second and third, to pocket P8,200 and P5,500, respectively.

The trio negotiated the 154 kilometers distance that passed through the key municipalities of the sixth, fifth and third districts of Pangasinan in three hours, 42 minutes and 25 seconds.

Sembrano, 26, was the 2005 Tour Pilipinas “Rookie of the Year” and is a member of the dreaded Pangasinan cycling squad called “Pitaki Boyz” of Guam-based Jazy Sportswear.

1998 Marlboro Tour king Victor Espiritu of Malabon City landed fourth to earn P3,000 and with a medal while 2003 Tour Pilipinas titlist Arnel Quirimit from Pozorrubio checked in fifth to net P3,000 and a medal.

The annual open event, held in conjunction with the celebration of Asingan town fiesta, was sponsored and flagged off by Region 1 DPWH Director Engr. Fidel D. Ginez.

It was participated in by a record field of 190 contestants.

Rounding up the top ten are: Alfredo Asuncion of Guimba, Nueva Ecija, sixth; Elmo Ramos, Jr. of Binalonan, seventh; Reynaldo Navarro of San Jacinto, eight; Desi Jardin of Bauang, L.U., ninth; Eric Feliciano of San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija, tenth.

Sixth to tenth placers received P1,000 and a medal each. All survivors were given P300 each. The first 150 participants were given free t-shirts.

The race was covered live over Aksyon Radyo Pangasinan from start up to the finish.—JAGJr.
