LINGAYEN—San Fabian Mayor Irene Libunao has expressed support to the proposition of merging her municipality with its neighbor Dagupan City if her townsfolk would agree.

Kung gusto ng aming constituents at kinakailangan, bakit hindi?” Libunao said during a talk with the press after the Public Briefing on the Use and Implementation of Geohazard Maps last January 15 at the Sison Auditorium here.

Libunao stressed that the people of San Fabian will first be consulted before the plan is pursued.

“Syempre isasangguni natin sa ating mga kababayan. Sa akin naman e, okay lang sa akin basta sa ikabubuti ng lahat,” the town mayor said.

Dagupan City Mayor Benjamin Lim earlier proposed a merger saying it will benefit the economy of both local government units, especially with the construction of the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX).

“…marami talagang nai-in love sa San Fabian, isa na nga diyan si Mayor Benjie Lim,” said Libunao citing San Fabian’s diverse topography of lowland, upland, and coastal areas.

Libunao also shared that if the plan gets to be realized, both towns will benefit. She cited, “merong prediction na time will come lulubog ang Dagupan…” noting that San Fabian has higher ground, upland areas.

Meanwhile, the mayor also announced that there is a plan to put up an evacuation center-cum-village in a two-hectare area in the upland part of the town.

The center will house all the basic necessities for evacuation operations such as equipment and a feeding area, among others.

“We are (also) preparing to have our disaster operation center…na ginagawa sa loob ng sports center,” she added.–Johanne Margarette R. Macob
