Barangays, teachers to get geohazard maps
LINGAYEN— The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) will conduct a series of workshops for the 1,333 barangay chairmen in the province to educate them on the use of geohazard maps for disaster preparedness.
MGB Region 1 Director Carlos Tayag said it is crucial to bring the information to the community leaders “as they are at the frontline in their areas”.
The workshops at the barangay level follows the distribution of geohazard maps and briefing for all municipal mayors held here at the capitol town last week as part of the National Geohazard Mapping and Assessment Programme led by Senator Loren Legarda, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Climate Change.
“Our local officials need to have the valuable, life-saving information regarding risks present in their communities, all of which can be found in the geohazard maps. These maps show where it is safe and unsafe to reside or to build infrastructure,” Legarda explained.
Pangasinan suffered its worst typhoon destruction when Pepeng submerged about 70 percent of the province in 2009.

The briefing was also attended by representatives of the Department of Education and a forum was later held for students of the Pangasinan State University.
Dr. Alma Ruby Torio of Pangasinan Division 1, representing the six schools superintendents in Pangasinan, asked Legarda to give them maps as well so teachers could help in the information dissemination.
Legarda, in response, vowed to provide them copies and asked the MGB to include the teachers in the workshops for the barangay leaders. —With reports from Eva Visperas, Johanne Margarette R. Macob and PIA-Pangasinan
