LINGAYEN—This capital town again celebrated the Bagoong Festival with a float parade and street dance competition January 11 to promote its one-town-one-product item and to honor the industry’s stakeholders.

Major bagoong producers sponsored the floats that highlighted their respective products while groups representing schools in Lingayen gave tribute to the bagoong-making process with unique movements in their dances.

Bagoong, fermented fish sauce popularly used as a side dip and for flavoring dishes, is the municipality’s official product under the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) “One Town One Product” program.

The first Bagoong Festival was held in April 2011 in Barangay Pangapisan North, participated in by Barangay Maniboc, the two villages known for making bagoong.

After the official selection of bagoong as the town’s OTOP through a resolution authored by Councilor Judy Vargas, the first municipal-wide festival was held January 20, 2012.

Bagoong, now exported in several countries, is known for its pungent smell but its flavor is something that the people of Lingayen are very proud of. – Johanne R. Macob
