BANI–A woman vendor was arrested here on Wednesday for selling shellfish confirmed to have been harvested from a red-tide affected area.

Linda Ochave, 47, of barangay Carot, Anda, was arrested while selling shellfish locally called “lukan” taken from the shoreline in barangay Wawa earlier declared by authorities as high in red tide toxin.

An advisory dated April 4 was issued by the Department of Agriculture and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources telling the public to refrain from harvesting or gathering, transporting, selling and eating shellfish such as mussels, clams, and oysters, among others, from that area.

The red tide, based on the advisory, is confined in that small area of the Lingayen Gulf and does not include shellfish coming adjacent Bolinao and Anda, which are the locations of large farms supplying mussels and other shellfish in Metro Manila and Baguio.

In Dagupan, City Agriculture Officer Emma Molina warned the public and to be extra-careful in buying and in their consumption of shellfish.

 Molina said her office is now continuously monitoring the fish market in Dagupan in order to ensure public safety and shellfish sold in the market are from red tide contamination.
