Have fun, but stay safe
DOH REMINDER
“APIR”, which stands for “Aksyon: Paputok Injury Reduction”, is the Department of Health’s campaign this year to reduce the usually numerous incidence of firecracker or fireworks-related injuries during the New Year revelry.
Dr. Noel Manaois, staff coordinator at Region 1 Medical Center’s (R1MC’s) health emergency management section, said part of the campaign is encouraging people to take alternative means of having fun in welcoming the New Year.
These include promoting and participating in the community fireworks display; use of alternative noise-makers like car horns, cans, pots and pans, and music; joining merry-making activities such as street parties, concerts and games; or, instead of making noise, using the time to reflect on the lessons of the past year and make resolutions for a better 2013.
Last year, from December 21, 2011 to January 4, 2012, there were 42 injuries recorded by R1MC.
Injuries sustained during the revelry resulted in blasting without amputation (24), eye injury (12), blast injury with amputation (5) and injury from stray bullet (1).
“It is better to meet the New Year with a complete set of fingers by observing these alternative ways than to welcome it with regrets” Manaois advised. (PIA-Pangasinan/AMM)
