They came in red on the 28th, hoping to attract some political luck and success.

Many local candidates, wearing red shirts, trooped to the Commission on Elections provincial office in Dagupan City on the 28th, a day before the deadline for the filing of candidacy, believing that the date and the color of their shirt may help them win in the May 14 election.

Graduating Bayambang Mayor Leocadio de Vera Jr, a candidate for congressman in the 3rd   district under the Nationalist People’s Coalition, was all smiles as he filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) saying red is his lucky color, adding that he is also a believer that the 28th, written with an upward end stroke, is a sign of progress.

For his part, Rep. Amado Espino Jr, running for governor under the Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) party, said he chose to wear a red t-shirt because “it is a fighting color and it also symbolizes good luck”.

He was accompanied by reelectionist sixth district Rep. Conrado Estrella III who was also in red t-shirt. Estrella is seeking his third straight term as congressman.

Espino said it is a challenge for him to fight the Agbayanis in the provincial arena who had long held the position of governor since 1971. The late Gov. Aguedo Agbayani was governor from 1971 to 1986 and again from 1992 to 1994, passed on to graduating Gov. Victor Agbayani from 1998 to present, who is now running for a congressional seat.

This elections, the incumbent governor’s wife, Dr. Jamie Eloise Manzano-Agbayani, is running for governor as an independent candidate. The Agbayanis did not personally file their COCs.

Espino claims he is supported by all the congressmen in Pangasinan in his candidacy, with the exception of House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr.

Reelectionist first district   Rep. Arthur Celeste also filed his candidacy for his third term together with Espino.

Celeste’s rival, retired army general Alberto Braganza, running under the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino party, filed his COC on the same day and the two embraced each other, saying that it is just a political exercise.

Also seen wearing red clothes Wednesday were Evangeline Dorao (Lakas) who is running for the provincial board in sixth district, sectoral Board Member Danilo Uy representing the   Pangasinan Councilors¦ League, and running for the board in the fifth district (Lakas), Tyrone Agabas as sixth district board member (Nationalist People’s Coalition) and his wife Board Member Marlyn Agabas, runningmate of Espino for vice governor under Kampi.

Re-electionist Board Member Danilo Dizon of the first district  under Lakas- Kampi also wore red t-shirt and so did lawyer Geraldine Baniqued running for  fourth district board member under Kampi.—EVA
