Coop asks P15 M from DA to boost mushroom culture
Rosales — A cooperative in barangay San Angel here has applied for P15 million grant from the Agricultural Competitive Enhancement Fund of the Department of Agriculture for its planned processing machineries for fresh mushrooms.
The application was filed by the 127-member Balikatan Multi-Purpose Cooperative headed by Ven Abalos, as presiding and chief operating officer, whose members are all producers of mushrooms.
The grant will be used to finance the setting up of a Regional Processing and Training Center for mushrooms.
“With the machineries, fresh mushrooms can be processed and canned for domestic and export purposes,” Abalos said.
The cooperative is now producing oysters mushroom, “taengang daga” (ganoderma), the medicinal type of mushrooms now being made as a food supplement.
He said with the plant, the cooperative expects to help reduce the country’s dependency on imported mushrooms estimated at 500,000 kilograms per year.
Saying that there is big demand for processed mushroom both locally and abroad, Abalos urged households to embark on mushroom raising so the country can be self-sufficient on mushrooms.
Mushroom raising has been identified by Rosales Mayor Ricardo Revita as the municipality’s entry under the One Town One Product (OTOP).
The cooperative was recently the recipient of P1 million donation from several donors: P500,000 from Partylist Congresswoman Leonila Chavez, P250,000 from the Aba Ako partylist and P250,000 from Congressman Conrado Estrella III, for the construction of its multi-purpose building.
