Dagupan Lakas set to bare bets today
THE final line-up of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats in Dagupan City is expected to be formally announced at 7:00 p.m. today in a meeting set by party leaders at the Inn Asia on Jose R. de Venecia Highway.
Dr. Mac Arthur Samson, president of the University of Luzon and likely campaign manager of the team, issued the invitation for the meeting but declined to confirm that it will be the party’s proclamation rally.
Expected to lead the party ticket are Immigration Commissioner Alipio Fernandez and business magnate Belen Fernandez, president and general manager of the retail giant CSI Group of Companies, as mayor and vice mayor respectively.
Samson, together with Dr. Jesus Canto, who is set to retire as director of Region 1 Medical Center, and Dr. Rodolfo Aquino informed former Councilor Fernandez about the Sunday evening meeting.
While Samson did not disclose who would be the party’s candidates for councilors, the speculation is his younger brother, Councilor Luis Samson Jr., will be a member of the Fernandez-Fernandez ticket.
Councilor Samson is known to be close to Mayor Benjamin Lim.
In an earlier talk with former Councilor Fernandez, she said among those being considered in the Lakas-CMD ticket per her talk with Commissioner Fernandez are reelectionist Councilors Michael Fernandez, Farah Decano, Dada Reyna, Danilo Torio, Jose Netu Tamayo, Alex de Venecia and Samson.
The other possible candidates are Dr. Canto and retired Regional Trial Court Judge George Mejia and two others yet to be named.
Ms. Fernandez bared to newsmen the Fernandez-Fernandez tandem shortly after making a call on Archbishop Oscar Cruz of the Lingayen-Dagupan archdiocese at his chancery on March 12.
Last March 11, Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr., in a talk to newsmen at his residence, said the Fernandez-Fernandez tandem is a formidable team and a good winning combination.
De Venecia also said there is now very little time left for Mayor Lim to reconsider his position but he did not elaborate.—LM
