Soriano pleads: Don’t mind my bodyguards

The sight of security escorts surrounding and trailing him everywhere could very well frighten, if not put off, would-be voters.

But Lawyer Gallant Soriano, deputy commissioner of the Bureau of Customs in an officer-in-charge capacity, who is planning to run for the congressional seat in the third district, has stressed that his bodyguards are a necessity for the real threats against his life.

“I did not request for bodyguards but because of the numerous death threats against me which I received through my mobile phone as well as in letters, the Bureau of Customs provided me with security escorts,” he said during Thursday’s “Kapihan sa Patrima”.

Soriano said the threats might have stemmed from the fact that he is the head of the Anti-Smuggling Task Force of the Customs Bureau, which has been responsible for the arrest and the filing of cases against smugglers and their coddlers.

He also gave assurance that his escorts have legal papers issued by concerned authorities and that he is willing to discard of any of them if found to be committing any abuse of power.

“Should there be any negative report against them, I would be willing to discard my bodyguards, lest it be exploited by his would-be opponents to their advantage,” he said.

LAKAS MEMBERSHIP

Meanwhile, Soriano expressed confidence that his oath-taking as new member of the Lakas- Christian Muslim Democrats before Governor Victor Agbayani last February 23 is valid because Agbayani is the highest official in the province.

Soriano was upset by rumors that his oath-taking is deemed invalid since Agbayani, though indeed Pangasinan’s top official, is not the party’s provincial chairman, a position that is held by Vice Governor Oscar Lambino.

Stressing that he had no intention of by-passing Lambino, Soriano said that his oath-taking before Agbayani was done in good faith and added that he was not aware that Lambino is filing a complaint before the Lakas-CMD directorate questioning Agbayani’s recruitment of non-Lakas CMD members.–APE
