YMCA Dagupan City strikes gold in Milo tilt

THE YMCA-Dagupan City Karate Team bagged a gold, one silver and five bronze medals in the 2nd series (for 12 years old and above) of the Milo Super Karate Kids held February 25, 2007 at Atriuma, SM Megamall Mandaluyong City.

Leading the winners was Jona Reyes, a senior high school student at the University of Luzon, who captured the gold in the 16 to 17 Girls Kumite and Bronze Kata.

Gerard Martin Tamayo of Dagupan City National High School won the silver in the 12 to 13 Boys, Kata; Jayson Ramil Macaalay of LN Special Science won 2 bronzes in the 14 to 15 Boys Kumite and Kata while John Meverick Edralin of LN-Creative Montessori won 2á bronzes in the 12 to 13 Boys Kumite and Kata.

Dr. Enrico Vasquez, the team’s director, said their members are slowly getting more familiar with the Kobe Osaka International (KOI) rules and patiently playing on their control attacks.

Vasquez also said the chain of good performances by the team showed that it is ready for the Philippine Olympic Festival North/Central Luzon Championships to be held March 5-11, 2007 in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur. Winners of the North Central will qualify for competition to compete in the National Olympic Festival September 2007 in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija.

The Dagupan City team is also expected to compete in the forthcoming National Open Karate Championships on May 2007 in Bacolod City.

Meanwhile, Vasquez confessed the team is facing financial constraints to cover the transportation and food expenses of the players.

The Milo Super Karate Kids, organized by Milo and the Association of the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK), was also participated in by AAK SM Megamall, AAK SM City North, Japan Karate Association, Philippines (JKA) Batangas Branch, AAK Lipa City, Ateneo, De la Salle Zobel, San Beda, St. Paul, and AAK St. Scholastica.
