7 arrested for killing, burning dogs for meat
MALASIQUI–Seven persons are set to be charged for violation of Republic Act 8485 (An Act prohibiting Cruelty to Animals) after were caught by the local police Thursday in the act of slaughtering dogs in Barangay Dinacuan here.
The suspects were arrested based on a tip provided by Melchor Alipio, a member of the Philippine Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and Networks for Animals (NFA).
Arrested were Rino Montano, 50, of Arvizo St., Upper Quezon Hill, Baguio City; Roger Maravilla, 47, San Pedro Laguna; Jessie Ferrer, 22, and Edgar Reyes, 17 both residents of Barangay Balite, San Carlos City; Lito Rodriguez, 53, and Delfin Lucena, 32, both of Barangay Dinacuan, Malasiqui; and Rex Pacleb, 33, of Camiling, Tarlac.
The police immediately responded upon receiving the report that there was an ongoing killing and burning of dogs in Barangay Dinacuan.
Confiscated from the suspects were 49 bodies of slaughtered and burned dogs, 22 other live dogs their mouths tied with plastic, and a Kia Besta Van color Blue bearing plate no. USG-117.
The confiscated items were brought to the Malasiqui Police Station for proper disposition while charges are being readied against the suspects.
The surviving dogs were turned over to Alipio.
The slaughtered and burned dogs were believed to be due to be transported to Baguio to be sold as meat. Meanwhile, all the live dogs were believed to have originated from Laguna.
This is the third incident of killing and burning of dogs in the same barangay, with some of those arrested last Thursday also involved in previous violations.—with report from Eva Visperas
