SLAYING OF JUDGE PAAS

NATIVIDAD–Death threats are reportedly flying all over the place over one murder case. Four members of the police station, including the chief of police, recently received a black ribbon bearing their names, unmistakably a death threat from would-be assassins.

The envelope containing the ribbon was sent to the police station and addressed to Insp. Bernardo Aromin, chief of police. When he opened it, he saw a black ribbon where names of SPO4 Hermilito Diaz, P03 Cecilio Laure and Arnold Soriano were pinned on it.

Included in the envelope is a note warning the policemen to stop in their investigation of the slaying of Pasay City Judge Estrellita Paas who was brutally killed in her home in Natividad sometime in September last year.

“We are not taking the threat lightly. We are taking it seriously,” Aromin said.

He said they were not the only ones who received death threats.
He said Mayor Alejandrea Supnet has asked for additional police security from the 10th Police Mobile Group after she received her own death threat before Christmas.

Aromin confirmed that Councilor Bobong Zaragoza also received a black ribbon after Christmas whose texture, he later found to be similar to the one received by him and his men.
The envelope containing the black ribbon was enclosed with a note that stated. “Magpakaligaya ka na. Malapit nang matapos ang kaligayahan mo.”

The envelope was placed in the gate of Zaragoza’s residence by a still unidentified suspect.
Even lawyer Ronald Paas, son of the slain lady judge, also reportedly received a death threat.
On the other hand, two men believed to be strangers were reportedly waiting for Regional Trial Court   Judge Ulysses Raciles Butuyan of Branch 5l in Tayug last Christmas in front of the Methodist Church in Asingan.

Butuyan was in Manila that time but the incident was relayed to him by the daughter of the Methodist pastor who saw the men asking questions about the judge.

It was Butuyan who  dismissed on Nov. 30 the case filed by the prosecution against two accused in the slaying of Judge Paas for lack of probable cause.

A motion for reconsideration was  filed by Atty. Paas, acting as private prosecutor in behalf of their family, but which was denied by Butuyan last Jan. 20.  Butuyan, on the same day, also issued an order voluntarily inhibiting himself from hearing the case, which order was copy-furnished the Supreme Court.

The police are investigating whether the bullet that wounded Noel Bince Jr., a second year law student, in front of their house was meant for his father, Assistant Provincial Prosecutor Noel Bince Sr.
