CALASIAO–Politicians and media men who have received death threats related to the coming elections may request for police bodyguards.

This was disclosed jointly by Provincial Elections Officer Reddy Balarbar and City Election Officer Remarque Ravanzo when they appeared at the opening of the “Kapihan sa PPRC (Pangasinan Press and Radio Club)” at the Dagupeña Restaurant here.

Balarbar said request forms for this purpose are available at their offices and all requests will be forwarded to the Comelec head office in Manila for approval.

“But applicants must first submit the proof of the death threats for validation purposes before the poll body acts on the request,” Balarbar said.

Ravanzo said media men are considered “high risk” individuals because of the nature of their work.

At the same time, he stressed that press freedom is not absolute, so there is a need for media men to be responsible in their profession.

Nevertheless, if they want to be secured by body guards, they can file their request at the Comelec. —APE
