Rachel Arenas: “It’s a privilege to serve”
MALASIQUI—Disputing rumors that she has backed out from the race for the congressional seat in the third district of Pangasinan and has now been replaced by her mother, Rachel Baby Arenas reiterated that “I cannot turn my back now.”
“It is a privilege to serve, but being a private citizen, I can only do so much for them now,” said Arenas in a talk with The PUNCH.
The Harvard-educated daughter of philanthropist Rosemary “Baby” Arenas said that in her rounds of Malasiqui, Calasiao, Bayambang, Sta. Barbara, Mapandan and San Carlos City, she has learned many things about the people, especially their problems.
With pressing issues, mostly as a result of poverty and lack of jobs and opportunities, “it would be cruel to turn my back on them,” she said.
She said she does not know who are behind the rumor but it has actually worked in her favor with more people throwing in their support behind her candidacy.
Arenas has been swamped by invitations to be the guest speaker in various Valentine events across the district.
At her headquarters, Arenas is seen personally attending to organizational that come to her attention.
She said she has succeeded in establishing several livelihood projects in almost every barangay and has expressed satisfaction that many have borne fruits for her intended beneficiaries. –LM
