LINGAYEN–Areas where migratory birds are landing in order to forage for food are being continuously monitored in Pangasinan to keep watch on the possible entry of the virus that causes bird flu.

Provincial Veterinarian Benedicto Perez said his office is closely monitoring swamps and marshes to make sure that any virus of the bird flu being possibly carried by the migratory birds will just die in that environment and not spread elsewhere.

He stressed that not a single case of the bird flu has been reported in the province or in any part of the Philippines, which has remained as one of the few countries in the region that is free from the deadly virus.

At the same time, the Provincial Veterinary Office has set up measures to check the occurrence or spread of not only bird flu but other animal diseases through their Livestock/Poultry Disease Control and Eradication Program.

“We are thankful to Governor Victor Agbayani for giving us the necessary support in our effort to make the province and the entire country bird flu-free,” sad Perez.

Perez added that the governor is pushing the program not only to protect the livestock and poultry industry but also public health.

For two years now, Pangasinan has likewise remained free from foot-and mouth disease (FMD) that attacks cloven-footed animals.

He said because of the checkpoints they set up in various entry points of the province, they have successfully prevented the access of sick animals from adjacent provinces.

These checkpoints were also able to check the deliveries of hot meat and to strictly enforce inspection and quarantine rules.
