Police leadership at its best
Up until last year, some towns and cities in the region referred to their police as “the finest” without fully understanding what it meant, if it meant anything at all. For some, reading the phrase painted on police cars only brought cynicism and sarcasm to their lips.
Well, there’s a new corps of the finest, not just in the towns and cities but in the whole Region 1!
News of the series of accomplishments of the regional police, under the leadership of Chief Superintendent Leopoldo Bataoil, in its campaign versus illegal drugs, marijuana and jueteng come as a breath of fresh air at a time when the populace has become skeptical of the police’s capability to perform after years of perceived helplessness to combat these pernicious vices.
To the credit of Mr. Bataoil, Archbishop Oscar Cruz no less expressed his optimism for the first time that jueteng money will not likely be used to influence the results of this year’s local elections in the province because jueteng has been effectively stopped since the change in the regional leadership.
Mr. Bataoil’s unprecedented accomplishments in the region is proof that leadership by example, coupled with integrity in government service, is all that it takes to make government not only relevant to the people but for government to earn the people’s respect and support.
That Regional Director Bataoil has been able to resist political pressure from the politicians who are now losing millions daily on account of his steadfast commitment to professional service speaks well for his own chief boss, Director-General Chief Oscar Calderon. It is said that in the police organization, no subordinate can go any further than what the superior allows. Evidently, Mr. Bataoil has the backing of Mr. Calderon. Three cheers for the chief.
We’d like to believe that this early recognition of the accomplishments of the officers and men of PNP’s Region 1 is not premature and that their moments of glory will not be short-lived being of the ningas-cogon breed. These early, we say to our cops in the region, remain steadfast and loyal to our communities.
