FLAGS were kept at half mast in all government offices in Dagupan on Friday as the city joined the country in mourning the death of Dagupeño Salvador Bernal, named National Artist for Theatre and Design in 2003.

The 66-year old Bernal succumbed to cardiac arrest last October 26.

He rose to national prominence for using inexpensive local materials in his film and theater production work.

On October 29, the National Commission for the Culture and Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of Philippines (CCP) held necrological services for him at the CCP Main Theatre in Pasay City, after which his body was transported to Dagupan.

The city government will hold civilian honors for him at the Museo na Dagupan, where his body will lie in state until November 2.

According to the artist’s elder sister, Tessie Bernal, interment rites for the national artist will be held at 12 noon, November 2 at the Eternal Gardens here.

Fondly known as “Mang Badong” in the Philippine theater scene, Bernal was born in Dagupan on January 7, 1945.

He designed and directed since 1969 over 300 productions, deemed by the NCCA as “distinguished for their originality”. (CIO)
