New earthquake assessment device set up in Dagupan
AN innovative approach in disaster risk reduction will be adapted soon in Dagupan.
The use of the Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS) software was recently taught to officials of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC).
Resident scientists and staff of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) led by Director Renato Solidum and Dr. Maria Leonila Bautista, associate scientist from the institute’s parent agency, the Department of Science and Technology conducted the training.
One of the important features of REDAS is its capacity to formulate policies and instructural constructions since it can forecast damages by a certain magnitude of earthquake tremor and localize its severity.
The software, developed by PHIVOLCS Deputy Director Bartolome Bautista, translates geographical, demographical and geological data into maps and simulates sample earthquake damages.
Representatives from the local government units (LGU) of Bauang in La Union, Maria in Aurora and Palapag in Northern Samar and provincial planning officers from Pangasinan and Benguet attended training.
Dagupan is the fifth LGU in the country to avail itself of the tool as part of its mainstreaming disaster risk reduction effort. (CIO)
