Another kapitan in San Carlos shot dead
SAN CARLOS CITY–Residents of Barangay Mestizo here have been witnesses to what now appears to be a running history of violence.
The chairman of the barangay was gunned down by two men riding in tandem on a motorcycle in Sitio Pao, an area within the village, in broad daylight on October 20.
The victim, Abraham dela Cruz, is the fifth kapitan killed in that barangay and the second in a span of one year.
Superintendent Marlon Tayaba, chief of police of San Carlos City, said De la Cruz, who was riding on a bicycle, suffered eight gunshot wounds in different parts of his body and died on the spot.
A pursuit operation was immediately conducted and one of the two suspects was arrested at 10:00 p.m., only a few hours after the shooting at around 10 a.m.
Tayaba identified the arrested suspect as Ramon Yanes, 48. Yanes denied his involvement.
Police Regional Director Franklin Bucayo ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Task Group “Dela Cruz ” to investigate the killing and hunt the killers.
Tayaba said one Caliber 45 pistol with one magazine containing seven live ammunition was seized from Yanes upon his capture.
Also found in Yanes’ possession was a bag that contained two magazines for Cal. 45 pistols containing seven live ammunition, ammunition pouch for Cal. 45 pistol, nine live ammunition for Cal. M-14 rifle and a camouflaged jacket.
The manhunt for the other suspect is still ongoing.
FIFTH VICTIM
Dela Cruz was voted number one Kagawad in the October election last year and succeeded as chairman when the elected kapitan, Alberto Manzon, was assassinated by the barangay treasurer due to an old grudge, only a few days after he assumed office.
Prior to the October 2011 election, the former village chief, Carmelita Torre, was also shot dead while attending graduation exercises in their barangay.
This came after two other village chiefs of Mestizo were slain during their respective terms.
