Young woodpushers test their skills
PANGASINAN AGE GROUP OPEN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
LINGAYEN–Young chess enthusiasts showed up at the Pangasinan Age Group Open Chess Championship held last weekend October 15-16 at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center for a chance to see who’s the best of them all.
The Pangasinan woodpushers had undergone formal training during the 2nd Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. chess clinic series that concluded on October 9, mentored by International Master Rodolfo Tan Cardozo, among others.
The chess tournament was also open to players from other provinces, according to Modesto Operania, sports consultant of the province.
The tournament had seven age brackets: Under 20, Under 18, Under 16, Under 14, Under 12, Under 10 and Under 8.
The event, said Operania, was the initial salvo of the scheduled series of games for this year’s Pangasinan Chess Festival being organized by the province to promote this mind sports among the youth in the province.
The Chess Festival serves as an opportunity for amateurs to play against grandmasters, he added.
The other scheduled chess tournaments are the Pangasinan Chess Championship on November 19 to 21 and the 3rd Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. Cup Open Chess Tournament on December 21 to 22.
The tournaments will be sponsored by the provincial government and organized by the Pangasinan Chess Federation.
