FVR tells Pangasinenses: Emulate Palaris
Former President Fidel Ramos has urged his kabaleyans to measure up to the fierce nationalism, daring and self-sacrifice demonstrated by the Pangasinan folk hero Juan de la Cruz Palaris by helping reduce poverty in the country.
Speaking at the grand fellowship and recognition of the Kaluyagan Nen Palaris (KNP) at the Manila Hotel last December 21, Ramos urged Pangasinenses to do their best to help uplift the life of the common people and contribute to nation-building and to the growth of their province.
“It is our job now to pass the torch to the younger generation of Pangasinan leaders. It is my fervent hope that this organization, (KNP) will serve as a major catalyst in recognizing, uniting, and harnessing the individual and collective strength of the best and the brightest among Pangasinenses to help build a stronger nation and ensure a better future for our people,” Ramos said.
Juan de la Cruz Palaris, a native of the old town of Binalatongan (now San Carlos City) led the people of Pangasinan in a rebellion against Spain over “tributo” (tribute) and proclaimed independence on November 3, 1762 after successfully overthrowing Spanish rule in Pangasinan.
The former president noted that the last time Pangasinenses were fully united was from 1992 to 1998 during his presidency.
Ramos pointed out that Pangasinenses have always risen to the crisis and challenge against oppressors, invaders and tyrants. He cited the revolution against Spain sparked by Katipunan; throughout World War II where thousand of Pangasinenses fought and died to defend freedom and democracy; and to the EDSA People Power Revolution in February 1986 and the EDSA People Power Revolt in January 2001.
“Let this be a fair warning to those who abuse their power. Pangasinenses, inspired by the likes of Juan dela Cruz Palaris and Andres Malong will always rise to the occasion and give their voice, talent and courage to be counted,” he said.
Ramos lauded the KNP leadership led by Environment and Natural Resources Undersecretary and KNP President Francisco Bravo, executive vice president Antonio Tamayo, secretary general Melandrew Velasco and awards chairperson Virgie Pasalo for their efforts in bringing back the Kaluyagan Nen Palaris and creating the Pillar Award.
Ramos led the KNP Pillar awardees and the men and women from Pangasinan who made their marks in the shaping of the nation’s destiny and the development of their province.
