TO help ensure safety of commuters in and around Dagupan City, the Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) will begin checking the registration documents and condition of public utility vehicles plying the city.

Jeepneys and tricycles have been subjected to a similar inspection earlier.

POSO Chief Robert Erfe-Mejia said the papers of the public utility vehicles must bear the same name of the owner or operator in the registration paper for the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the franchise from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

Documents that show different information, particularly names of owners will have to be verified and owners will be asked to effect formal transfers of ownership.

Erfe-Mejia explained that identifying true owners of vehicles involved in accidents or violation of ordinances always delayed investigations because of conflicting information in their documents.

Aside from the documentation papers of the unit, the owner or operator will also be asked to fix defects in their vehicles such as the electrical system, headlights, park lights, and brakes, etc.

Erfe-Mejia, however, was silent on the complaints of motorists about habit of PUJ drivers who drive around the city at night without turning their headlights on. (PIA-Pangasinan)
