BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

FOURTH District Rep. Gina de Venecia is batting for a more intensive educational campaign on breast cancer to improve the level of awareness among women.

With awareness, she said, the disease can be detected at an early stage and treated with less costly medication.

Further, De Venecia, in a privilege speech before Congress on October 3, called on the Department of Health to help reduce the cost of medicines for breast cancer treatment and to subsidize the cost of chemotherapy for women cancer patients.

De Venecia, president of the Ladies Legislator League in the House of Representatives, delivered the privilege speech at the start of the observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In a talk to newsmen in Dagupan, De Venecia stressed the urgency for the adoption of her recommendation to mitigate the survival rate of women patients suffering from breast cancer which has pegged at only 40 percent.

She attributed this to the high cost of medicines and chemotherapy, noting that cancer is now the number one killer disease for women in the Philippines.

“If we have a breast cancer awareness program that helps women detect the disease through self-examination at an early stage, there is a possibility of not having to seek chemo-therapy, which is expensive,” De Venecia said.
