Bangus shortage expected in Dec. due to typhoon damages

WITH an estimated P18 million worth of damages in fishponds caused by back-to-back typhoons “Pedring” and “Quiel”, bangus operators foresee a shortage in bangus supply in December.

The bangus consignacion in Dagupan said the expected fish harvest for the Christmas and New Year holidays have been destroyed and there is not enough time to grow more supply for the holidays.

Itong darating na buwan, di na sila makapagpalaki agad- agad dahil malamig na ang tubig, papasok na ang alat at ang high tide ay magiging gabi,” said Ely Tumagos of the consignacion, the city’s fish traders group.

The City Agriculture Office confirmed the group’s assessment saying the damage brought by the two typhoons “is very significant”.

Malaki ang damage sa fishpond area natin,” said city agriculturist Emma Molina.

The estimated amount of damages, however, could decrease, according to Molina, once floodwaters subside and fish farmers are able to harvest and sell the fish that spilled out of the ponds.

Last week, bangus price went up to P95 per kilo from the normal price of P75 -P85.

Molina said the city government will provide financial assistance to affected fishermen. (PIA-Pangasinan)
