Initial “Pedring” damage placed at P35.4M, 1 dead

PANGASINAN BRACES FOR “QUIEL”

LINGAYEN— Even as the provincial government continues to assess the damage brought by Typhoon ‘Pedring’, Governor Amado Espino Jr. has already called on local government units and provincial government agencies to prepare and remain vigilant as Typhoon Quiel threatens to smash in over the weekend.

 

Earlier, he expressed relief as Typhoon Pedring weakened from Signal number 3 to number 1 and commended local leaders and the people noting how they for established a “system of consciousness” during times of calamities.

 

The governor said while local government units and non-government organizations are more responsive today, he assured that the provincial government is also now more equipped and ready to extend assistance in times of typhoons and other disasters.

 

The PDRRMC leads and keeps in close coordination with its various member agencies such as the Philippine National Police (PNP), Department of Public Works and Highways, National Food Authority, Philippine Army, Philippine Navy, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine National Red Cross, Provincial Health Office, Provincial Engineering Office, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, General Services Office, Provincial Information Office and the Bureau of Fire Protection.

 

PEDRING’S WRATH

 

Initial assessment of the impact of Typhoon “Pedring” shows that it exacted P35.4 million worth of damages in agriculture and infrastructure, based on the report as of September 29 of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRMMC).

 

Infrastructure damage was estimated at P19.9 million, composed of P19 million on provincial roads, P800,000 on provincial bridges, and P100,000 on dikes.

 

Damages on agriculture reached P15.5 million with destroyed palay, assorted vegetables, fishery, livestock, and poultry.

 

A total of 14 houses were listed as damaged and 19 others and partially damaged.

 

More damages in agriculture and infrastructure are expected as some areas in Pangasinan, like Bayambang, are still submerged in floodwater and evacuation is still ongoing.

 

A total of 653 families or 3,060 persons were evacuated in 15 centers throughout the province.

 

Meanwhile, also still under rising flood water as of Friday morning are Barangays Mangin, Salisay, Malued, Pogo Grande, Pogo Chico, Lasip Grande, Lasip Chico, Mayombo, Bacayao Sur and Lucao, all in Dagupan City.

 

The flood spawned by heavy rains affected 56 barangays in 12 municipalities and cities of Pangasinan.

 

One fatality was reported, identified as Maricel Bustamante, 32, a housewife, who was pinned down when a mango tree near their home was uprooted and fell on their nipa hut in Barangay Sioasiao, Sual on the night of September 27.

 

Bustamante’s husband, Darwin, was injured and rushed to the Western Pangasinan District Hospital in Alaminos and is now recuperating. Their two children who were sleeping with them when the incident happened were unscathed.

 

Three other persons were reported injured in separate towns of the province.

 

FISHERMEN

 

At least 71 fishermen from Infanta town were reported to have sought shelter at the Scarborough Shoal as typhoon Pedring battered the province last week.

 

There were 59 fishermen initially reported missing, all from Barangay Cato, Infanta who were on board six fishing boats that went on an expedition in the West Philippine Sea, a rich fishing fishing ground near Scarborough Shoal, on September 22.

 

All 59 have been accounted for, and as of press time five who were on board MV Judith Ann already made it home, according to Master Petty Officer Conrado Cabrera, chief of the Philippine Coast Guard detachment in Sual town

 

The five fishermen who returned home said that while at Scarborough Shoal, they were joined by 11 other fishermen from Zambales on board MV Zambaleña.

 

The PDRRMC, meanwhile, said 19 were already reported safe (With reports from PIO/PIA-Pangasinan)
