Three-month chess festival starts Sept. 17

LINGAYEN–Chess buffs in the province and from around the country will see action in the series of chess tournaments of the Pangasinan Chess Festival that started on September 17 with the 2nd Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. Chess Clinic at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center here.

Modesto Operania, sports consultant of the province, said the chess festival is part of the sports development program of the provincial government to develop the youth’s potential in mind games.

Both young and adult chess players will have the chance to compete in three tournaments, namely: the Pangasinan Age Group Chess Championship to be held on October 15 to 16, the Pangasinan Chess Championship on November 19 to 20, and the 3rd Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr Cup Open Chess Tournament on December 21 to 22.

The ongoing 2nd Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. Chess Clinic is clustered into three categories: beginner, intermediate and advance. It is mentored by International Master Ricardo Cardozo and scheduled on September 17, 18, 24, 25, October 1 and 2.

The Pangasinan Chess Championship will be exclusively for Pangasinenses while the Open chess tournament is for all interested chess players.

Operania said the chess fest will promote and develop chess in Pangasinan as well as provide exposure for players against grandmasters.

The tournament is sponsored by the provincial government and organized by the Pangasinan Chess Federation.
