Arenas exposes ‘Items for Sale’ at DepEd

THIRD District Rep. Ma. Rachel Arenas has exposed what she called the racket of “items for sale” in the Department of Education (DepEd).

Arenas revealed she has been receiving numerous complaints from teachers that some DeEd officials are demanding “fees” from teachers who are still holding temporary positions despite their long years of service in order to secure a permanent status.

Teachers are allegedly asked to pay from P40,000 to P100,000 to get permanent status.

Warning teachers in her district not to succumb to the racket, Arenas said teachers should not “buy” something that is rightfully theirs as she vowed to bring the matter to Education Secretary Armin Luistro.

Arenas noted, however, that still some teachers are reluctant to admit that the “Items for Sale” is really happening in some public schools because it could jeopardize their own present positions.

Nevertheless, she said that Luistro has already issued an instruction that teachers can report, even anonymously, with copy furnished to Arenas, such malpractices to stop this once and for all.

The DepEd is supposed to grant permanent status to teachers based on qualifications, length of service, and the need in a particular school.

Arenas distributed the Notice of Staffing and Compensation Allocation (NOSCA) last Sunday to 44 teachers from the district who recently got their permanent status to teach.

“We already have many misgivings in education but please don’t add more by committing anomalies,” she told the teachers.

She also urged them to continue with their hard work and sacrifice, and refrain from exacting unnecessary fees from their students.
