Lim bent on hospital project
UNPERTURBED by reluctant support from the city council, Dagupan Mayor Benjamin Lim is pursuing the plan to construct a Dagupan hospital inside a school compound.
The proposed hospital will be located at the compound of the Juan Guadiz Elementary School, covering an area of about 3,000 square meters in barangay Poblacion Oeste.
Lim said he had already discussed with Schools Division Superintendent Alma Ruby Torio about the relocation of the more than 200 students of the school to the nearby West Central Elementary School I and II.
The hospital, according to Lim, is intended to serve Dagupan residents, providing free services to the poor while those who can afford to pay will be charged corresponding fees.
The planned services are x-ray, blood testing, maternal and child care except caesarean operations, and rehabilitation.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod, chaired by Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, has expressed reservations about the proposal as Dagupan is already home to the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC).
Lim, however, counters that despite the presence of R1MC as well as the Pangasinan Provincial Hospital in San Carlos City, both government-owned and offer inexpensive medical services, these hospitals are not enough to handle the number of patients from around Pangasinan and nearby provinces.
BARANGAY NURSES
Meanwhile, the 39 nurses deployed to the 31 barangays in Dagupan will soon complete the medical and health profile of the city.
The nurses, employed by the city government, have been tasked in their first 30 days of work to gather medical and health data on children 12 years old and below, people with disabilities and senior citizens.
The survey covers incidence of malnourishment, nutritional needs, prevalence of diseases, number of stroke patients, and kinds of handicaps.
Lim said the city administration will use the data to determine the health needs of Dagupenos and undertake corresponding actions. (PIA-Pangasinan)
