2011 PRISAA-UCAAP SKIRMISHES

LIVING up to their title as defending champions, the University of Luzon Golden Tigers beat tournament leader Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes, 83-80, in their game last Thursday held at the DWAD gym for the ongoing 2011 PRISAA-UCAAP Collegiate Basketball Championship.

The Tigers orchestrated a 15-1 jump start with its center John Larry Balmes at the helm pumping in 10 of his team’s 20-15 lead in the first period.

They never relinquished the lead up to the end, surviving a serious threat in the fourth and final quarter, giving the Dukes their first loss after four outings.

The Tigers and the Duke now share the league’s top slots with a single failure, identical with UPang-PHINMA Flames.

“It’s experience that made us victorious. I’ll give credit to my boys especially the veterans Jonathan Panunciar, Balmes and Nikko Cresencio,” said assistant coach Byron Vidal.

Panunciar has a team high 18, Balmes had 17 and Cresencio contributed 12 points.

In the first game, the Flame set another milestone by breaching anew the century mark for points, plastering the AIE-College Golden Eagles, 111-77. The Flames clobbered PIMSAT, 131-67, on August 8.

The Eagles suffered their third defeat with a single conquest.

In the second game, three-point specialist Eugene Ponce nailed a tough shot with 11 seconds left and converted two free throws with one tick remaining to lift Colegio de Dagupan Blue Stallions past PAMMA Sea Warriors, 93-89. The Stallions and Warriors are now tied at fourth place behind leaders UL, LNU and UPang-PHINMA.

“Despite our two consecutive setbacks, our boys’ big heart, determination and confidence still stay and I believe that’s the main reason why we were victorious,” coach PJ Samson happily quipped.

For the games on August 15, to be held at the DWAD gym, LNU faces AIE-C at 1:00 p.m. CdD tangles with UPang-PHINMA at 2:30 p.m., while PAMMA tackles PIMSAT at 4:00 p.m.–JAGJr.
