Mirant late in paying RPT

LINGAYEN – Provincial Treasurer Ramon Crisostomo said the province may not top Real Property Tax Collection (RPT) among all provinces in the region for the first time this year due to Mirant Philippines’ non-payment of its RPT.

Crisostomo told newsmen that Mirant, owner and operator of the Sual Coal-Fired Power Plant, continues to ignore the demand of the province to pay its RPT for the current year, resulting in the big shortfall in the province’s collection.

Negotiations are reportedly underway for the sale of the plant to another company.

Pangasinan has been the perennial topnotcher in RPT collection in Region I and Crisostomo now doubts if the province can retain its position as the topnotcher in RPT collection this year.

He said that if Mirant fails to pay its RPT before the end of December this year, he will coordinate with Governor Victor Agbayani and the Provincial Legal Officer on the legal steps to be taken against the company.

He also warned that that non-payment of RPT by Mirant can cause a serious economic dislocation and particularly cause suspension of repair
