STA. MARIA—This town was adjudged as the “LikasYaman” awardee in the municipal level in Region 1 for its bio-diversity and eco-tourism projects in each of its 21 barangays.

The award, presented during the culminating event for the Environment Month in June, was conferred on the town for successfully utilizing the whole municipality in implementing conservation and eco-tourism projects, benefitting both the environment and the people in the community.

Sta. Maria Mayor Teodoro Ramos hailed the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) regional office headed by Director Samuel Penafiel for recognizing the efforts of the municipal government to make the town clean and green and tourist-friendly.

Ramos said the program enabled every barangay to become “a haven for nature lovers” and geared up to accommodate tourists.

The municipal government also developed a one hectare area in the poblacion where fruit and forest trees have been planted, serving as another tourist spot.

Sta. Maria – an agricultural town planting rice, corn, burley tobacco and vegetables – is located in the eastern side of Pangasinan, bounded by Rosales in the west, Tayug in the east and Agno River in the north.
