Dengue rise alarms health authorities

AUTHORITIES at the Region 1 Medical Center have expressed alarm over the increasing number of dengue cases in the province, especially with records of admittance shooting up from July 1 to 7 alone.

Dr. Michael Canto, R1MC spokesman, said 28 children were admitted and treated for dengue in their hospital in that period alone.

All the pedia cases range from one to 18 years old, the ages that doctors consider as most vulnerable and susceptible to dengue.

Of the 28 cases, six were from Dagupan and four each were from Mangaldan and Laoac towns. The rest came from different towns in Pangasinan.

Three of the dengue cases registered in Dagupan were from Barangay Lucao, and one each from Barangays Tebeng, Bonuan Gueset and Mangin.

MOST IN DAGUPAN

Canto said there were 66 dengue cases that were registered at R1MC for the whole month of June this year compared to five during the same period last year.

Fortunately, so far there has been no registered fatality.

Of the 66 dengue cases for June 14 were from Bolinao and 10 from Dagupan.

As gleaned from monthly reports of R1MC, Dagupan continues to register the most number of dengue among all 48 towns and cities of Pangasinan.

Hospital authorities said this is because Dagupan is an urban area and has a thick population as compared to other cities and towns in the province.

Canto said records indicate that dengue is now prevalent both during the wet and dry seasons.

He said dengue cases usually start from June and peak by the month of September.

To cope with the big influx of dengue cases coming to the hospital, R1MC bought a brand new Apheresis machine that can immediately separate platelets from the blood directly from a donor.

With the modern Apheresis machine, the platelet can already be taken from a standing blood donor, saving time and even money for the patient.

The German-made machine, the only one of its kind in Pangasinan, was bought from the hospital’s P4.2 million budget this year.
